Labels, Placards & Markings

 

Hazardous materials require special markings, labeling and placards while in transit by air, ground, rail, and sea.

The responsibility for the labeling and placarding belongs to the person offering the hazmat for transportation, however, the carrier also is responsible.

The carrier must make sure that packages containing hazmat have been marked and properly labeled according to the requirements before accepting and transporting them, and also to place the proper placards to a transport vehicle or freight container.

Please note that if a shipment has been offered undeclared or without the with a Competent Authorizations, it qualifies as an incident involving undeclared hazmat and must be reported by each person in possession of the material on Form 5800.1 within 30 days.

This includes carriers, freight forwarders, consultants and all individuals and organizations involved in the transport of Dangerous Goods.
